10 tips for new swimmers
-
Goggles. Your goggles should fit snugly around the eye, and you should feel a slight suck. You may need to try on a number of different brands and styles until you find ones that are both comfortable, and watertight on you.
-
Togs. If you plan to swim frequently, chlorine resistant togs will last significantly longer than regular togs. If you do have regular togs, wash them with fresh water after every use to prolong their life.
- Cap. Wear a swimming cap to protect your hair from chlorine exposure.
- Wear waterproof sunscreen if you are swimming
outdoors.
- Be courteous to other swimmers by stopping only at the ends of the pool (not in the middle of the lane), pushing off the wall in a straight line and being in the most appropriate lane for your speed.
- Follow the lane direction stated, if you’re not sure, ask a lifeguard.
- Only dive into a pool if you know the depth, and are comfortable with diving.
- When entering the water, ensure there are no swimmers within 15m of the lane you are about to enter.
- Have your equipment (kick board, pull buoy, fins etc) ready by your lane before you start swimming.
- Swimming is all about technique; for advice talk to your local Quality Swim School about lessons, or swim club about masters swimming
